Two Kids Couldn’t Afford Pokemon Cards, So They Created Their Own Game

It looks like disappointment can really inspire creativity. Redditor one23abc has revealed that he and his little brother couldn’t afford card games like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh when they were younger (probably because they were fucking extortionate). But where most kids would have given up and moved on, these guys decided to start their own game.

Creature Cards is a series of 300 hand drawn cards, each with a unique monster. Highlights include “Volcano Man” and the sinister sounding “Cheese Boy”. It’s currently unclear whether Nintendo will attempt to get them with a retroactive cease and desist order.

Anyway, one23abc explains the rules on Reddit. There are 3 types of card: creature, evolution and item. You use MP to attack to try and take some of your opponents HP. There’s a lot more to it than that, obviously, but we won’t go into it here. Needless to say, it’s astoundingly well thought out.

one23abc, currently 22, just completed a degree in mechanical engineering. His brother is ‘planning on doing a PhD in biotech. All thanks to Creature Cards? We doubt it, but it clearly helped two creative and smart kids fuel their passion, so good for them.
