Ubisoft Have Killed Far Cry 5’s Dog Companion, And It’s Canon

Of all of the companions you could have by your side in Far Cry 5, the canine chum Boomer was by far the best.

This four legged friend was an invaluable ally on my quest to restore order to Hope County, and I’m not ashamed to say I loved him. Unfortunately, it seems as if Boomer has ascended to the great kennel in the sky – at least according to Ubisoft, which basically makes it canon.

Given that the recently announced Far Cry New Dawn is set nearly two decades after Far Cry 5, and a global nuclear war between Russia, China, USA, and Europe, even the most hopeful among us couldn’t have made much of a case for Boomer somehow surviving both the ravages of time and a nuclear holocaust.

Sure enough, one of the first things Ubisoft officially confirmed regarding Far Cry New Dawn is that Boomer sadly didn’t make it, and won’t be joining us on this adventure.

Far Cry New Dawn Creative Director Jean-Sébastien Decant explained:

You know, it’s 17 years after Far Cry 5. We considered for a while having maybe a descendant of Boomer at the new pet, but we wanted to go for something fresh. But no, 17 years…if he was a baby or a pup in 2018, 17 years later he would be old. It was a rough world for 17 years.

While this is undoubtedly a bitter pill to swallow, we can at least assume that Boomer managed to make it to some kind of shelter where he was able to live out the rest of his days protecting and cheering up his fellow survivors. That’s my canon.

Far Cry New Dawn will feature a new dog to join forces with in the form of Timber. Whether or not this pup can match up to the great Boomer remains to be seen, but at least this one will be able to ride around in a car with you.
