In a recent interview with Gamespot, Resident Evil Umbrella Corps producers have given more detail about the upcoming third person shooter, including when it’s set in the Resident Evil universe.

Resident Evil has always been about calmly paced horror, mixed in with moments of pant-wetting terror. Clunky controls, terrible camera angles and disjointed voiceovers all lend themselves to making the series so horrifying.
With this in mind, fans were understandably confused when Capcom announced it would be making a slick, action-heavy first person shooter based around the franchise. Alarm bells started ringing, and those alarm bells said Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City.

Umbrella Corps producers Masachika Kawata and James Vance sat down with Gamespot, and state the reason they decided to go down the shooter route, was because that’s what they believe the western market wants.

Kawata also goes on to explain where Umbrella Corps fits in relation to other games in the long-running series:

Umbrella Corps is set in the present day of Resident Evil, which means it’s after the events of Resident Evil 6. It’s almost in an ironic way that we’re using the title Umbrella Corps. If you know your Resident Evil lore, Umbrella no longer exists at this time in the universe; it’s been destroyed.

Kawata also states that there will be no ‘forward-facing’ story, meaning the game will pretty much only have the online shooter element. Check out the full interview with Gamespot here.
