As I’m sure you know, the Warcraft movie didn’t do as well as anyone involved might have hoped, despite a massive budget and – strangely enough – huge success in China.
By and large, the film has been regarded as a critical and commercial failure. Now director Duncan Jones has opened up about how he feels regarding the film’s reception and his part in it all.
In an interview with Thrillist, Jones (himself a fan of Warcraft) revealed that he had fairly conflicting feelings about the end result.
He explained:
I’m equally proud and furious about Warcraft. I love it. I spent so much time on it. I put all my heart into trying to make it work. Parts of it, I think, work but it also drives me crazy that I wasn’t able to push through everything that I knew needed to happen in order to make the film I knew it could be.
Jones also discussed how the film’s three-year production process led to constant changes affecting the entire movie, and how he had to deal with trying to work out how to ‘patch up what has been messed around with’.
Still, there were (as you might hope) parts of Warcraft that Jones feels he can be proud of – in particular the relationship between Durotan and Draka, the orc characters played by Toby Kebbell and Anna Galvin.
Jones said:
[It feels] like a real relationship between a husband and wife, and those two characters being orcs. That was something that I pitched right from the start, and fought hard for, and was able to keep that in there. That always felt like a real win.
Despite his mixed feelings, Jones confirmed that he’d be up for coming back for a sequel.
Of course, this was always the plan, but we live in a world where box office numbers dictate if there’ll be more films – so we’ll just have to wait and see.
