Ubisoft has announced a colourful new open world game called Gods & Monsters that looks… well, just look at the trailer below – it looks exactly like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not that that’s a bad thing at all, because it looks absolutely stunning.
Gods & Monsters is an open world game that’s inspired by Greek mythology, so expect to see plenty of demons and gods from that particular mythos. You’ll play as a fully customisable character called Phoenix on a quest to defeat Typhon and his minions, and save the Olympians.
I was told during a closed-door session that the entire game will be framed as a story which legendary Greek author Homer is telling to his grandchildren, so as we play through Gods & Monsters there’ll be plenty of playful narration and interaction from the grandkids.
Gods & Monsters will feature a large open world full of dungeons, puzzles, and monsters to slay. via “over the top combat” The brief gameplay I saw looked incredibly similar to the most recent Zelda, with lots of veritcality in the open world, the ability to glide, and climb pretty much anything.
There’ll also be “RPG” mechanics such as crafting and the aforementioned character customisation (you can start the game as male or female). Did I mention it looks gorgeous? It takes the cel-shaded look of Breath of the Wild and just runs with it.
It’s being developed by the team who worked on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, who told me during a closed-door session that the game was a way for the studio to embrace more fantastical elements, much like AC has started to.
The Assassin’s Creed comparisons likely end there though. Ubisoft sees Gods & Monsters as a game for all the family, so don’t expect to see any gore or sex in this one.
Gods & Monsters is coming to Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in February 2020. Breath of the Wild was one hell a game, so anything in a similar vein is fine with me.
