Scientists have discovered the mind still functions after your body stops showing any sign of life.
In some cases, patients have heard medics announce their own DEATH.
Others report having seen ‘the light’. Some even say they floated above their body. I say they’re full of…! Nah, I’ll reserve judgement.
I respect the work of medical professionals, even if they did classify homosexuality as a mental disorder in the 20th century.
You’d suppose it was nice to be conscious of dying. Passing away unknowingly in your sleep is a bit anti-climatic, no?
The news comes alongside the release of Flatiners, a remake of the 90s cult film, which follows a group of young doctors who experiment with chemically inducing themselves into heart failure so they can find out what happens in the afterlife.
Author of the Dr Sam Parnia told Live Science:
They’ll describe watching doctors and nurses working and they’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.
Parnia said the recollections were verified by medical and nursing staff who claimed patients could remember what they said after being pronounced technically dead.
He added:
Technically, that’s how you get the time of death – it’s all based on the moment when the heart stops.
Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously.
You lose all your brain stem reflexes – your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone.
