Say goodbye to your bedtime briefs, as it turns out they could be causing you some pretty serious harm.

And this terrifying world of pain could be brought to life no matter whether you’re a man or a woman – however your risk factor could be intensified if you’re a night-time sweater.

Dr Alyssa Dweck, a gynaecologist based in the New York area, often tells her patients to ‘sleep without underwear’, reports the Mirror.

But why? Well, it’s not really a laughing matter.

For men, sleeping in underwear can actually increase their chances of infertility, according to recent research.

Dr Brian Steixner – Director of the Institute for Men’s Health at Jersey Urology Group in the US, said:

Your nether regions need to be just the right temperature in order to optimise sperm production.

When the crotch becomes to warm, the optimum temperature for sperm production can be massively affected – which in the long run, can become a very serious problem.

Although the health issues are not just for men.

He added:

More bacteria makes for a higher likelihood that any chafed or irritated skin down there becomes infected.

Whereas Dr Dweck said:

If [the area] is constantly covered – especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent – moisture collects, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.

She added that this could lead to an extreme case of chafing, irritation or a skin infection.

If you don’t quite like the idea of sleeping with your tackle out then the doctor’s advise you should raid your local shop for a loose-fitting cotton pair.

But it seems that sleeping in the nip is the most ideal option, as it can also help to lower blood pressure as an after-effect of cooling down the body.
