SWNSShocking images have emerged of surgeons removing a tumour which was fifty times larger than the patient’s kidney.
28-year-old Manju Devi from the Darbhanga district of Bihar state in North India had suffered from a painful ‘lump’ on the right-hand side of her body for three years. She had also been passing blood in her urine.
After scans were taken, an enormous 31cm by 19 cm mass was detected on her kidney, which weighed a gigantic 5.5kg.
Her internal organs were ‘dwarfed’ in comparison to this world-record-smashing renal tumour, which had come to prevent her from carrying out her everyday activities.
SWNSHowever, getting the tumour removed would prove to be very difficult. She contacted the urology department of Mumbai based Sion Hospital after various hospitals deferred the potentially dangerous surgery.
According to urologist Dr Ajit Sawant, head of the surgical team who attended to Manju, surgery had been deferred because of the unprecedented scale of the tumour:
She was no longer able to do her day to day activities because of the huge mass in her abdomen.
In the past three years she had been referred to multiple hospitals, however because of the enormous size, the surgery was deferred.
Her CT scan showed a large – 31 cms x 19 cms — tumor completely replacing the intestines and the pancreas to the left half of the abdomen.

There were several significant risks involved with the surgery, which were explained to her family beforehand.
Such risks included proximity to vital blood vessels and the potential for the chest having to be opened during the procedure.
Fortunately, after evaluation, Manju was assessed to be fit enough to finally undergo the intensive surgery, which would take a specialist team of surgeons a gruelling eight hours to complete.
SWNSThe medical procedure took place in November 2016 at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital at Sion in Mumbai. Working alongside Dr Sawant was Dr Prakash Pawar as well as uro-anesthetists Dr Geeta Patkar and Dr Aparna Nerulkar.
According to Dr Sawant:
After thorough evaluation of her fitness to undergo supra-major surgery, she was posted for radical right nephrectomy.
The enormity of the surgery can be understood by comparing the weight of the kidney tumor –5.5kg with the weight of a normal kidney which is 110 to 140s.
SWNSFollowing successful surgery, Manju was kept on a ventilator. She was released from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital after a week of recovery.
After her unusual ordeal, she has apparently now resumed her everyday activities and has regular check-ups every three months. We wish her all the very best for the future.
The Guinness Book of World Records has now confirmed this was in fact the largest tumour in the renal area ever to be discovered.
The hospital has reportedly received an official certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records team, marking this excellent achievement.
