Research suggests the Agave plant, that is used to make the famous Mexican drink, has naturally occurring sugars – agavins – that can help lower blood sugar.

It’s possible that this could result in a new sweetener being created which could be beneficial to the 3.5m Brit’s and 28m Americans who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

The Agavins found in the drink are non-digestible which means they act as a dietary fibre and don’t raise blood sugar levels.

Research was presented to the American Chemical Society in Dallas and showed that the agavins can also make people feel fuller – therefore eating less.

Think I’ve just found my new favourite drink…

Dr Mercedes G. Lopez, who carried out the research said:

We believe that agavins have a great potential as light sweeteners since they are sugars, highly soluble, with a low glycemic index, and a neutral taste, but most important, they are not metabolized by humans.

Agavins are not expensive and they have no known side effects.

Researchers made the discovery after feeding a group of mice a standard diet and added agavins to some of their water – the one’s with the added ingredient ate less and lost weight, with glucose levels decreasing.

However, diabetes.co.uk have stated that we shouldn’t get carried away:

No other study has reached this conclusion and the dangers of drinking lots of alcohol with diabetes remain the same.

This study should in no way encourage you to drink bottles and bottles of tequila.

Well there you go kids, just remember that whatever you’re drinking, drink responsibly!
