With just hours left until Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to watch as the real estate mogul replaces Barack Obama in the White House.
The soon-to-be president will take office just ten weeks after stunning the world by winning the U.S. election.
But what is the day set to look like? When will Trump be sworn in? And most importantly, what happens next?
Here’s a guide to the historic transition.
What is a presidential inauguration?
The newly elected president is sworn into office by the Chief Justice of the United States every four years at noon (17:00 GMT) on 20 January.
The ceremony is then followed by a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue and celebrated through a series of inaugural balls.
The oath is part of a ceremony marking the peaceful transition of power from one president to the next on the steps in front of the U.S. Capitol.
What’s the schedule?
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will accompany Trump and his wife, Melania in a motorcade to the Capitol.
The Inauguration ceremony will officially begin at 9:30am (14:30 GMT) with musical performances, followed by Supreme Court Justice swearing in Vice president-elect Mike Pence.
The Inaugural Swearing-In Ceremony will begin at 11:30 (16:30 GMT) followed by the Inaugural Parade at 15:00 (20:00 GMT).
Who going to be there? And who is not going to be there?
President Obama and the first lady will accompany Trump to the Capitol for the official ceremony. They will be joined by members of Congress, politicians and supporters.
Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are expected to attend, along with George W Bush.
An estimated 800,000 to 900,000 people are expected to flood Washington on Friday, but it is unclear whether they will be there in celebration or protest, officials said.
In contrast, Obama drew an estimated 1.8 million people to the nation’s capital when he took office eight years ago.
More than 50 House Democrats are publicly refusing to attend the ceremony amid a feud between Trump and the civil rights activist and congressman, John Lewis, the BBC reports.
How can I watch/avoid watching the inauguration?
Various live streams of the Swearing-In will be available online through YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, with all major American news networks streaming the inauguration.
BBC World News will broadcast rolling television coverage from 14:00 to 23:00 GMT (09:00 until 18:00 EST) on Friday.

When does Trump start work?
Trump has vowed to scale back many of Obama’s policies on ‘day one’ in office, but it’s unclear whether that begins on Friday or Monday.
The soon-to-be 45th President of the United States told Times of London earlier this week that ‘day one’ would not begin until Monday.
He said:
I mean my day one is going to be Monday because I don’t want to be signing and get it mixed up with lots of celebration.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said the president-elect may take four or five executive actions after he is sworn in on Friday.
