I feel pretty elated when I catch sight of just one corgi waddling around with a big cheeky grin. So imagine my rapture after learning 1,000 corgis banded together as one cuddly entity over the weekend, taking over a San Francisco beach for Corgi Con.

For the fifth year running, corgis and their owners flocked to Ocean Beach to celebrate all things corgi. This glorious event took place on Saturday, June 15 and if there’s a better way to spend a sunny June day, I’m yet to hear it.

There were all sorts of corgis in attendance, from jolly corgis to serious corgis, playful good boys to chilled out doggy sunbathers. All, of course, bearing the distinctive short legs and fluffy bottoms of this fun-loving breed.

According to a packed schedule detailed on the Corgi Con website, there were plenty of ocean side activities for corgis and their humans to enjoy together, from ‘Corgi Ninja Warrior’ (a four legged obstacle course) to ‘Mickey’s Derby’ (Corgi Races).

Four legged and two legged attendees alike had the chance to pose for some almost criminally cute group pics. There was also a corgi costume event, with competitive dogs sporting cowboy outfits and Elton John sunglasses.

Hoodline reported how corgis and their owners had travelled far and wide to partake in the adorable event, with visitors from as far afield as Hong Kong and Japan flying over especially.

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, an invitation was even extended to renowned corgi fanatic Queen Elizabeth II.

Sadly, her regal duties must have prevented her from attending, but her maj would no doubt have approved of the attention and tummy rubs lavished on these good dogs.

Corgi Con founder Cynthia Lee – who owns two corgis of her own – told Hoodline:

The internet loves them because they’re funny-looking, They’re always happy, and they don’t think they are small dogs.

People see them and they melt, and they’re so happy, My biggest joy of this organisation is just seeing how happy people are.

Speaking fondly of the kinship found within the corgi owner community, Lee said:

Everyone is very connected, The group is very welcoming as breed owners. Everyone wants to share information.

Fun and games aside, Corgi Con also helped to raise vital funds for two rescue organisations, Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue and CorgiAid, spreading the love to corgis who need it the most.

No doubt there will be many San Franciscan corgi lovers left completely bereft about missing out on this woofly day. However, never fear. There will be another event in October, giving you the perfect excuse to make your corgi the best Halloween costume going.
