Hundreds of people gathered in a massive field to partake in the biggest snowball fight of the century, because why the hell not?

The result was as epic as you could imagine, as more than 300 people flocked to Clifton Downs in Bristol on Friday.

The event began on Facebook as a joke, but quickly became a real thing after 2,000 people registered their interest.

Carlos Sandin, who created the Facebook event, even wrote a bunch of rules for people to abide by.

They included:

1. Snow balls only (no rocks, no sticks, no ice etc.)

2. No snow balls thrown until 3pm

3. If you’re not part of the fight (taking a break) put your hands up and move out the way

4. Don’t hit anyone with their hands up

5. Don’t hit anyone with a camera (or the drone)

6. Take care of each other, don’t be a d*ck

7. Have fun!

8. Snowmen/women are protected citizens, if you hit one you’re getting bundled…

Predictably, the whole thing got a bit out of hand, but the footage looks as though everybody had a great time, including some people showing up in incredible fancy dress.

Carlos Sandin told the Bristol Post before the event:

It started off as a joke in my flat. My friend Sion dared one of us to set up a public event, so I did and now Bristol’s gone mad for it.

I’d be very impressed if 100 people turn up, but the event is sitting on 2,000 interested and 300 going, so who knows.

We could actually get thousands embarking on the downs for a massive snow ball fight.

People have been comparing the incredible battle to the likes seen in Braveheart and Game of Thrones, and tbh we’re very jealous we weren’t there.

Students weren’t the only people having the time of their lives thanks to the snow: some penguins were captured frolicking in the frosty weather.

A photo from Edinburgh Zoo showed the Gentoo penguins excitedly enjoying the snow, the ‘Beast of the East’ handed over to us this week.

The Scottish zoo, which is home to Europe’s largest penguin pool, wrote on their page:

The weather conditions may have been challenging for us humans, but they didn’t stop this Gentoo penguin from enjoying the #SnowDay!

Gentoo’s are the third largest penguin species and while they may not be the most eye-catching, they more than make up for it with their exuberant personalities.

Our penguins can be found at Penguins Rock, Europe’s largest outdoor penguin pool.

Sometimes, you’ve just gotta have a bit of fun, right?
