We often lament how society is going down the proverbial drain pipe, and how the youth of today just aren’t learning from the mistakes of the past. Instead, just further regurgitating our mistakes in new and vile formats.
But every now and then, society is offered a chance to prove those doubters wrong. Suffice to say when they do, we’re all the more happy for it, as is the case with these three young kids.
They returned a wallet stuffed with $700 (£534) after finding it outside the owner’s house.
The father of the owner of the wallet posted the video of the kids dropping off his son’s wallet from his security camera and posted it on Facebook where all three kids have been praised for their integrity.
Let’s be real with each other for a second, who can honestly say they’d return a wallet with 700 big ones in it? I can guarantee some – if not most – would have second thoughts about returning it to its rightful owner.
However, keeping the money must’ve been the last thing on the minds of 13-year-old Haylie Wenke, her six-year-old brother, Regan, and their friend, Ashely Dayton.
When they came across the wallet on July 18, in Colorado – containing enough cash to go on a wild shopping spree – they decided to do the right thing and return it to the rightful owner.
But with no one at the house of Jamie Carlton, the trio were instead greeted by an automated surveillance system who tells the kids to leave a message.
Addressing the robotic voice, Haylie explains to the machine how they found a wallet outside of a car, and were returning it so no one would take the money.
Haylie can be heard telling the security machine:
We found your wallet outside of your car and we just thought we would give it back to you.
I’m going to put it over here so no one takes any money. You’re welcome. Thank you.
Speaking to KDVR-TV Haylie says the trio were riding their bikes to the water park when they spotted the wallet.
She goes onto explain:
We just thought it would be a good thing to do. It just feels good because we really didn’t need the money. So we just decided to give it back.
Residents in the area say the wallet actually belonged to Jamie’s son, Nigel Drake.
He posted the video on Facebook so he could get in contact with the kind-hearted kids who returned the wallet.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Haylie and Regan’s mother, Kerri Eddy Wenke, spoke of her pride for her two kids, saying:
It is very humbling the kids have gotten so much attention!
I would like to take credit for their actions, but we really can’t. They were by themselves and chose to put the wallet in a safe place all on their own!
As parents I think we always hope they are doing the right thing when we are not around or when no one is watching. It makes me very proud!!
Thier dad, Ryan, added:
We try our best to make sure they are taught between right and wrong.
Since going viral, Mr Carlton has said he’s been contacted by Kerri so he can pass on his and Nigel’s thanks to them.
Well done guys, there’s hope for humanity after all!
