The doctors told his parents he wasn’t worth saving, they told them to give up hope, that by keeping him they would merely drag themselves down – but his mother, Zuo Hongyan, flat out refused to let her son go.

Even Ding Ding’s father gave up on him – a decision which eventually led to him and Zuo divorcing.

According to the South China Morning Post, Zuo had to take up numerous jobs to look after Ding Ding as a single mum – but her selfless love was unbounded.

Ding Ding was a slow learner but his mother spent her every waking hour, outside of work, teaching him how to read, write, and use chopsticks.

She explained:

I didn’t want him to feel ashamed about his physical problems. Because he had inferior abilities in many areas, I was quite strict on him to work hard to catch up where he had difficulties.

Now all of Zuo and Ding Ding’s hard work has paid off.

Good luck at Harvard!
