Bullitt County Sheriff's OffcieThe family of a two-year-old girl have labelled their dog a hero after she stayed by the missing toddler’s side for two days until she was found safe and well.
Last week, Charlee Campbell went missing at around 10am from her grandmother’s home in Lebanon Junction, Kentucky.
Search crews had spent two days looking for missing Charlee who’d wandered off into the woods near by.
Yet she wasn’t alone. Her loyal canine companion, Penny – a pit bull – stayed by her side until they returned home on Saturday, both safe and well.
According to WIS-TV Charlee’s grandmother, Beth Campbell – who she lives with – said she’s still ‘amazed’ Charlee (nicknamed Mo) was alive, saying:
Whenever they told me that they had found Mo, Charlee, I was just outside of myself. I was just so happy.
When my dog didn’t come home, and my baby wasn’t home, she was not going to leave that baby until she got here.
This is our hero right here.
WAVE 3 NewsLaw enforcement officials said Penny arrived home shortly before Charlee was found at a neighbour’s house, several hundred yards up a wooded hill.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office wrote:
Charlee’s amazing survival story continued tonight when she walked up on a porch on Roy Layne Road this evening.
The homeowners realized who she was and contacted authorities. She has no obvious serious injuries but did appear dehydrated and had some tick bites.
She is en route to the hospital for evaluation. Ironically, her dog returned home on its own a few minutes prior to Charlee approaching the homeowners.
We cannot thank enough the firefighters, EMT’s, dispatchers, search teams, other public safety agencies and the volunteer searchers from the community. Bullitt County residents always step up to help each other. #CharleeIsSafe #WeAreBullittCounty

Charlee’s grandmother continued:
I can’t even explain how happy that I am that this baby is home, because I love her more than anything in this world.
She also revealed some extra treats would be in store for both Charlee and Penny, with Penny being put on a diet of hamburgers for as a way to thank her for staying with Charlee.
WAVE 3 NewsA sigh of relief was also expressed by the man who found her – Wayne Brown.
Brown revealed how he’d been sitting on his sofa, praying for Charlee’s return, when he saw a blonde-haired girl in his backyard.
The sight of Charlee marked the end of the search, but it hit close to home for him due to another heatbreaking reason.
He said:
My little brother went missing. He’d wandered away from the home and he had climbed three fences. They found him miles away from the house. It was actually my uncle that found him and he was dead.

They’ve been everywhere. They’ve been all over this place, and how did they not find this child, and she just shows up where the search has been. How does that happen?
Over the weekend, the Bullitt County Sheriff showed up at Brown’s Roy Layne Road property to do a foot search, down the hill to Charlee’s house.
It’s hoped they’d find tracks or scents (by using dogs) or answers which are still missing, despite Charlee returning home.
Charlee’s family revealed she was still in the hospital on Saturday morning, but the youngster was doing okay.
Hopefully Charlee makes a full recovery as soon as possible!
