A woman who broke up with her boyfriend after he sent her body-shaming text messages has been raking in the love online.
Shelby Johnson posted screenshots of messages she’d received from her unnamed partner on Twitter – and they weren’t nice.
She asked her followers if they thought she was ‘overreacting for feeling hurt’.
Her post was met with a huge response – 11,000 comments – as well as thousands of likes and retweets.
The day after her post, Shelby updated her followers.
She wrote:
I haven’t been able to see him since I posted this. With the help of my therapist today I have a plan to end things and move on. I will be seeing him tomorrow and dropping a hefty 180 pounds.
The support I got is amazing. I really thought only my few twitter friends would reply!
Seemingly boosted by the response she was getting, Shelby said she was taking care of herself and felt ‘proud’.
She said:
My ‘beer gut’ and I are having a night of face masks and Mary J Blige music… breakups suck, but losing yourself sucks more. So I’m taking care of myself Last abusive relationship I was in took two years for me to escape. So this time, I feel proud recognising it in two months.
Later, she addressed her followers and thanked them for the messages she’d been receiving.
Telling them:
I have hundreds of messages so I’m gonna go through them tomorrow when I’m hydrated and have had sleep. Because I feel like death. Stress is fuckin whack on your body. Twitter is amazing! I love humans! Ya’ll are so kind and social media is so insanely awesome.
I wish I could reply to all the messages I’m getting… I’m reading every single one and they’re so kind and supportive. My birthday is in May and I wish I could invite you all, damn!!! Hah! [sic]
Shelby also said she’d broken up with her partner and said he’d been upset by the response and would use this experience as a ‘learning curve’.
She wrote:
I want to update you guys that we are broken up. He was really unhappy and felt like shit, especially after knowing my tweet went viral. He has told me he’ll use this as a learning experience to be a better person. And here I am, single and free.

She added:
Breakups really suck. Even when someone really hurts you, you can still miss them when laying alone in bed at night. Just gotta remind myself I’m okay, I was okay before him, I’ll be okay after him. Breakups dont get easier even after the millionth one.
Hopefully Shelby can find somebody – if she wants to that is – who respects her, and loves her properly.
And for anybody else being shamed, remember, it’s not ok. Love yourself.
