According to the New York Times, most of these celebs manage to keep themselves in the black by pimping out their social media accounts to various companies who use them as advertising.
That’s why you get some celebs tweeting inane shit about products you know they probably don’t use and perhaps hadn’t even heard of before the cheque arrived in their bank accounts.
Lets take everyone’s favourite family of people who are famous for seemingly no reason The Kardashians, more specifically the oldest of the brood Kim who has 81 million devoted followers on Instagram.
Now according to Captiv8, a company that ‘connects brands to influencers’ someone with three million to seven million followers can charge, on average, $187,500 for a post on YouTube, $75,000 for a post on Instagram or Snapchat or $30,000 for a post on Twitter.
This means that Kim who’s got more than ten times the amount needed for a $75,000 Instagram post. Now while we can’t say exactly how much Kim earns for a snap we can pretty safely infer that it’s more than I earn in a year.
Meanwhile those with slightly less clout on social media, say 50,000 to 500,000 followers, can charge on average is $2,500 for YouTube, $1,000 for Instagram and $400 for Twitter.
Snapchat’s another way people can earn money using social media as well Shaun McBride, better known as Shonduras online, has worked with the likes of Google and Red Bull on advertising campaigns on Snapchat.
Apparently brands are willing to pay around $10,000 for a Snapchat story he claims.
