Liverpool has been named as the UK’s kindest city, with over half of all Scousers performing an act of kindness every day.

Apparently Liverpudlians are more likely to hold a door open for someone, hold the lift for someone else and help others with heavy shopping bags than any other group of people.

They also say small gestures mean the most.

A survey was commissioned by Travelodge ahead of Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17 and it found a massive 55 per cent of Liverpool residents will perform a random act of kindness.

Considering the national average is around the 33 per cent mark, that’s pretty good going by the people of Liverpool.

York came in an honourable second, with 51 per cent of residents performing random acts of kindness while sunny Manchester came in 3rd with 48 per cent.

The top ten ended up looking something like this:

  1. Liverpool – 55%
  2. York – 51%
  3. Manchester – 48%
  4. Aberdeen – 40%
  5. Plymouth – 38%
  6. Wolverhampton – 37%
  7. Leeds – 35%
  8. Cambridge – 34%
  9. Glasgow – 32%
  10. London – 31%

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokesman, said:

A random act of kindness can be something very small but it can have a major impact on someone’s life.

Every day we see random acts of kindness being performed from our hotel teams across our 542 UK Travelodge hotels.

One hotel manager offered to be a city tour guide for a couple traveling from Canada and a receptionist went the extra mile and decorated a couple’s bedroom with red roses on the day of their surprise engagement.

This research shows we are certainly a nation that likes to dish out random acts of kindness, which is a powerful force as receiving kindness not only improves our happiness, physical health but our general well being.

For those wondering, Oxford came in last place.
