Women, and men for that matter, should never be expected to shave unless they want to. Your body is your own and you can do whatever you like to it.
Which is exactly the point Madonna’s 22-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon was emphasising, when she turned up to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Gala last week, unshaved.
GettyTo be quite honest, it’s ridiculous how a woman rocking unshaved armpits and legs on a red carpet is newsworthy in 2018, but sadly, it’s the world we live in.
Wearing a stunning white tulle-draped dress with sheer cut-outs, Lourdes looked elegant at the event, showing off her body hair for all to see.
She certainly takes after her mother, who also stopped shaving when she hit her twenties.
In a 2010 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Madonna revealed why she decided to embrace her body hair rather than remove it:
Going to high school, I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that. So I decided to do the opposite.
I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits. The boys in my school would make fun of me. ‘Hairy monster.’ You know, things like that.
Straight men did not find me attractive. I think they were scared of me because I was different.
I’ve always asked, ‘Why? Why do I have to do that? Why do I have to look this way? Why do I have to dress this way? Why do I have to behave this way?’
Why indeed!
Thankfully, Madonna didn’t let the comments get to her and now, she’s inspiring others to embrace their body hair – including Lourdes.
To bring 2018 in, Madonna shared a cute family photo with Lourdes with the caption, ‘We are Ready For You 2018’ followed by a lot of black hearts and dancing girl emojis.
On the image, Lourdes has her armpit hair in full view, which of course got a lot of attention.
Sadly, the trolls were out commenting with their usual derogatory remarks including ‘ugly’, ‘trashy’ and ‘nasty looking’.
Have people forgotten armpit hair is a natural part of the human body?
Lourdes and Madonna did get some support though, with many women applauding their courage for sharing the picture.
One user rightfully wrote:
How dare any of you to say anything about what she does with her body? It’s her body not yours so if she chooses not to shave that’s her business!
You should keep all of those negative ass comments to yourself!! She’s a beautiful girl and this is a beautiful picture between a mother and her daughter!! [sic]
Another added:
You and your mom are beautiful!!! Embrace who you are!! Don’t shave unless YOU want to! Women can be however they want to be. [sic]
Hopefully, one day soon, the world can just get over the fact women have body hair. Simple.
