If you’re anything like us, you probably check your phone far too many times throughout the day – before you’ve even got out of bed, at important family gatherings, mid-conversation with a real person… Hell, you’re probably looking at it right now.

Considering then, that mobile technology has basically taken over our lives at this point, it’s not a great shock to find that a recent study confirmed that people across the U.S. are constantly checking their phones.

The consulting firm Deloitte surveyed almost 50,000 people, ages 18 to 74, in over thirty countries for its annual Global Mobile Consumer Survey.

And, apparently, nearly half of America checks their phone 25 times every day on average – and even that seems surprisingly low, considering we basically live our lives through social media and text messages nowadays.

Factoring in eight hours of sleep a day, that’s only an average of checking your phone 1.5 times every hour. We’re just not convinced people can avoid reaching into their pockets for a cheeky glance for that long, to be honest.

Even so, that’s still quite a lot of screen time and, as reported by Esquire, the vast majority of those in the study admittedly they use their phones at least occasionally while shopping, spending leisure time, talking to family and friends, watching TV, and eating at a restaurant.

As for first thing in the morning, 17 per cent of people check their smartphones immediately, and 43 per cent check them within five minutes.

At the other end of the spectrum, 13 per cent of people check their phones immediately before falling asleep, and 33 per cent check them within five minutes before drifting off to the land of nod.

So you’re telling us that more than half of those surveyed don’t check Facebook before bed? We’re calling bullshit on that one!
