Did you see Pete’s bit on SNL last night?
I didn’t because it doesn’t air on TV over here, but boy am I glad for the YouTube gods because we get to see everything a few hours later.
So Pete Davidson is back on our screens, and this is good, because he’s been going through some tough times recently.
In December last year, Pete posted and quickly deleted a message to Instagram that got fans, friends and colleagues worrying for his wellbeing.
The post read:
i really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. i’m doing my best to stay here for you but i actually don’t know how much longer i can last.
all i’ve ever tried to do was help people. just remember i told you so.
His Instagram went offline and people were seriously concerned about him. Fortunately, following the posts it came out that Pete was safe and well at the SNL studio at 30 Rock.
And now Pete’s back for real on our screens as he took his seat in last night’s Weekend Update segment.
He opened up the segment saying:
As you know I’ve had a real crazy month and I want to talk about something very important to me. The new Clint Eastwood movie The Mule.
It’s unbelievable. Have you guys not seen it?
Pete was joined on-screen by fellow comedian and Mule appreciator John Mulaney. When asked if they’ve been spending time together, Mulaney said, ‘We do but a lot of time it looks like I’m Pete’s lawyer.’
Pete explained:
People usually think he’s like an NBA coach and I’m the controversial rookie.
John explained, ‘I’ve been spending time with Pete to try to show him that you can have a life in comedy that is not insane’, which erred dangerously close to awkward when talking about mental health, before adding: ‘A sober, domestic life.’
Pete replied:
Yeah and after observing John’s life I publicly threatened suicide.
I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t make that joke. But it is funny.
The two shared a cringey moment when Mulaney said: ‘Look me in the eye, you are loved by many’, to which Pete nodded in a being patronised kind of way, ‘you are loved by many and we’re glad you are okay’, Mulaney added. Snapping back into comedy mode: ‘Ok back to The Mule.’
The two then talked about Clint Eastwood’s latest movie, in which they were amazed that a 90-year-old could drive – obviously didn’t get the Prince Philip memo – and have threesomes, which apparently happens in The Mule.
At the end of the segment Pete shouted:
I didn’t mention her once!
We hope Pete’s back in good spirits.
