A Sainsbury’s worker who invited a widower to dinner said the date ‘reduced her to tears’.
Ellie Walker invited pensioner Edwin Holmes to have dinner with her after she heard the 86-year-old spends most days alone.
When he turned up in a suit and brought flowers, the 22-year-old said she began to cry.
Speaking to The Sun, she said:
He said it was his first ‘date’ in 55 years and he was as nervous as a schoolboy.
It made me cry because I could see how much it meant to him. For me it’s the most important part of my job to speak with customers and see how their day is going.
Walker, who works at a Sainsbury’s in Leeds, said Edwin often comes into the store and chats to staff.
She called the 86-year-old ‘without a shadow of a doubt my favourite customer’, and added: “He is the cutest man and so chatty.”
After hearing he would be spending Christmas alone, Walker offered to spend the evening with him on a dinner date.
She told The Sun: “I thought if it was my granddad and he was alone I would want someone to talk to him.”
The unlikely friends now meet for coffee and chat regularly, with Walker saying the two very much enjoy each other’s company.
