Apparently there’s a reason for all that eerie awkwardness when you brought your girlfriend / boyfriend home for the first time, and it’s pretty damn interesting.

A brand new study has explained that it’s due to the difference in the way you see your partner as opposed to how your family see them.

The study, published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, asked women to rank the importance of 133 qualities they look for when they look for a partner.

The same women were also asked to rank the exact same qualities, but if that partner was for their sister instead of themselves.

As you can probably expect the ‘dream’ partner was faithful, loyal, honest, reliable, and trustworthy in both scenarios.

But other than those typical qualities we look for in every good and solid relationship, what the women looked for in a partner for their sister was insanely different.

Instead of looking for someone who was charming, hilarious, good in bed, and fun (which they all looked for in a relationship for themselves), the researchers found that women wanted their sisters to have partners who were ’empathetic, responsible, helpful, sensible, and kind’.

Which sort of explains that while you can be beyond in love with your boyfriend’s hilarious jokes and pick-up lines, your family is sitting their wondering when he’s gonna start being serious.

Although I think my girlfriends dad took a disliking to me the first time I ever met him when I started to talk about his daughters bosoms. I think he likes me now though. Surely…

Another study composed in 2013 states that your family wants their bloodline to be as strong and healthy as possible – so they want your partner to increase the chances of you passing on your (and indirectly, theirs) genes.

Personally it all seems a bit animalistic to me…
