Arkansas Crater of Diamonds State ParkA teenager got pretty damn lucky when he stumbled across a giant diamond in a park in Arkansas.
Kalel Langford was enjoying a visit at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, when he came across the huge 7.44 carat diamond chilling by a stream.
The treasure-hunting teen and his dad had only been inside the park for about half an hour, before Kalel made his incredible find, Time reports.
Arkansas Crater of Diamonds State ParkHe said he found the mysterious dark, shiny gem ‘just a few inches from a stream of water, with a bunch of other rocks that were about the same size,’ near the south of the park.
Amazed by what he’d picked up, Kalel went to check out exactly what he’d found at the Diamond Discovery Center.
His find wasn’t any old sparkling rock though, this one happened to be the seventh largest found in the park since its opening in 1972.
Arkansas Crater of Diamonds State ParkAstounded by his discovery, he gave it the appropriate title of ‘Superman’s Diamond’ and rightly so, plans to keep it.
The park interpreter Waymon Cox seemed pretty impressed by the rock he’d found and described the unusual gem as ‘pinto-bean sized,’ with similar colouring to ‘coffee.’
He said:
This diamond is a truly extraordinary find.
About an inch of rain fell on the plowed search area during the week. A heavy rain can uncover larger diamonds near the surface. Diamonds have a metallic-looking shine and are often easier to spot on top of the ground.
A slightly bigger one at 8.52 carat, was discovered in 2015 and sold for $1 million, which suggests the teen’s rock will go for a similar price.
Wow. That guy certainly got lucky there then.
Who would have thought that mysterious, brown rock could potentially be worth so much? Not jealous at all…
