The most ignorant places to live in the world have been named and some of them might surprise you.

A ‘survey of ignorance’ has been carried out to find out which are the most ignorant countries in the world, based on people’s knowledge of their home, the Independent reports.

The survey ,called ‘The 2016 Index of Ignorance’, got its enlightening information from 27,250 interviews from people aged 16-64, between September-November last year.

Ipsos Mori, behind the survey, interviewed between 500-1000 in each of the 40 countries they observed, with participants answering questions about their society.

The questions involved included their country’s population, healthcare spending, home ownership and the percentage or proportion of Muslims living in the country.

Interestingly, a country’s economic status didn’t necessarily have as much of an impact on the findings as the researchers expected, with richer countries appearing in the ‘most ignorant’ section.

Here’s the list from the most ignorant countries to the least:

  • India
  • China
  • Taiwan
  • South Africa
  • USA
  • Brazil
  • Thailand
  • Singapore
  • Turkey
  • Indonesia
  • Mexico
  • Canada
  • Montenegro

America – undeniably the richest country in the world – takes its place among the most ignorant countries.

The list went on…

  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Philippines
  • Hong Kong
  • Israel
  • Denmark
  • Argentina
  • France
  • Vietnam
  • Peru
  • Spain
  • Chile
  • Hungary

There’s no real excuse why countries such as Hong Kong and major European countries like France and Spain, should be in the middle of the ignorance list.

The least ignorant countries are as follows:

  • Japan
  • Belgium
  • Poland
  • Colombia
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Australia
  • Malaysia
  • Czech Republic
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands

These are perhaps not as surprising, although it is intriguing that Malaysia – a country which is not fully developed – hits the top ten, with major players in the world of politics floundering behind it.

Definitely a fascinating discovery.

Great news for a relatively small country like the Netherlands who have topped the charts, deeming themselves the least ignorant country in the world.

We could probably all learn a thing or two from them then.
