Somehow it’s been 17 years since the first – and obviously best – American Pie film was unleashed onto an unsuspecting teenage audience.
Pretty much everyone could relate to at least one of the characters, making it the perfect backdrop to a whole generation’s formative years.
A number of the actors became household names – if only for a short while – while, for others, the teen comedy marked the high point in their careers.
So, getting on for two decades later, what have the stars of the original film been up to and what do they look like?
Shannon Elizabeth – Nadia
Every teenage boy’s absolute fantasy at the time, Shannon appeared in films including Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Thirteen Ghosts but has now moved on to her second career as a pro poker player, taking part in both the World Series and National Heads Up Poker Championships.
Jason Biggs – Jim Levenstein
Aside from the American Pie sequels, Jason has dabbled in literary circles, submitting work to a couple of New York based anthologies but most notably resurfaced as Larry Bloom in Orange Is The New Black, leaving the show after two seasons in 2015.
Mena Suvari – Heather Gardner
In the same year as her role in American Pie, Mena also experienced the highlight of her acting career, earning a BAFTA nomination for her performance as Angela Hayes opposite Kevin Spacey in American Beauty. Since then she’s become a model for Lancôme cosmetics and a long-time activist for the the African Medical and Research Foundation.
Chris Owen – Chuck Sherman
Following the original American Pie, Owen also appeared in American Pie 2 and American Pie Presents: Band Camp as the infamous ‘Shermanator’. In recent years, it appears he has been doing less acting after it was reported in 2013 that he was moonlighting as a waiter at a Sushi restaurant. He’s certainly looking good though.
Eddie Kaye Thomas – Paul Finch
The suave teen has gone on to have a successful career as a film, television, and stage actor, as well as a stand-up comedian. His roles include Andy Rosenberg in the Harold & Kumar series, Jeff Woodcock in ‘Til Death and he is currently starring in the CBS show Scorpion as Dr. Tobias Curtis.
Chris Klein – Chris ‘Oz’ Ostreicher
Klein went on to have roles in the Mel Gibson Vietnam War film We Were Soldiers, as well as the disastrous remake of the film Rollerball. After being arrested for drink driving in 2010, it was announced that Klein had checked in to a 30-day alcohol addiction program.
Tara Reid – Victoria Lathum
It’s fair to say that Tara Reid’s post American Pie life has been anything but dull. Rehab, Celebrity Big Brother, botched plastic surgery… You get the idea.
Thomas Ian Nicholas – Kevin Myers
Post Pie, Nicholas has played Frank Sinatra, Jr. in Stealing Sinatra, as well as a few other roles, but has focused mainly on music – he released his debut album in 2008 and has now gone on to release five further works.
Sean William Scott – Steve Stifler
Having received just $8000 (£5000) for his role in the first film, Scott went on to demand larger roles in the sequels, and a fear of typecasting led him to play a wide variety of roles in his career. Rumours circulated that he was struggling with various addictions and in 2011 he successfully completed a treatment programme for ‘health and personal issues’.
Alyson Hannigan – Michelle Flaherty
Surely the most successful of the group, Hannigan has gone on to play numerous parts on both stage and in film with her most notable roles surely being as Lily Aldrin on the hugely successful and long running show How I Met Your Mother and Willow Rosenberg in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
