This Man Has Lived In A Sand Castle For Over 20 Years

Marcio Mizael Matolias has been the king of his own castle for 22 years.

Okay, his castle is made of sand, but it still looks much more inviting than some of the bedrooms I rented during that regrettable stretch in London.

The 44-year-old lives on a stunning beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Locals know him as ‘The King’, report the Mirror. Which makes sense because he lives in a castle.

Also he wears a plastic crown. Not sure what that is about.

‘King Marcio’ has carved out a small room under his ornate sand castle where he can sleep at night. It is supported by wooden beams so he doesn’t have to worry about being crushed to death in his sleep.

Although, if I’d built this sand castle that is something I’d definitely worry about – even after 22 years.

He’s filled his three-metre square personal space with golf clubs and books.

While he doesn’t have to pay rent or bills for his handmade home, it does require constant upkeep.

Marcio has to water the sand constantly to stop it drying out and crumbling away.

Not a problem I’ve ever had in rented accommodation in South Manchester, most of my houses have been so damp that I can use the mould on the walls as a rudimentary calendar.

Marico explained that he has the opposite problem on the blazing beaches of Rio:

The sand holds all the heat, so sometimes at night I can not sleep here, I’ll spend the night at a friend’s house, but I prefer it here even if I have to lie outside by the sea.

Bit cheeky nipping down a friend’s house when stuff gets tough seems like a bit of a cop out if you ask me. Either live on a beach or don’t Marcio.

That said, what he has built is genuinely impressive. It’s been a while since I tapped a bucket with the back of a plastic spade but nothing this incredible ever came out.

Fair play King Marico keep up the awesome work.
