WikipediaA small town in Slovenia is all set to welcome a new attraction that will be every drinker’s dream – a public beer fountain.
According to the Daily Mail, the town of Zalec has revealed plans for the €350,000 (£275,000) fountain which will be the first of its kind in Europe.
The town is hoping it will be a lure to tourists from all over the world when it opens in a local park.
ZalecDRVisitors will be able to sample brews made from local hops costing €6 (£4.70) for three 30cl servings in a commemorative mug, Slovenia’s Dnevnik news website reports.
The town is in the Lower Savinja Valley – known as the ‘valley of green gold’ thanks to the abundance of hops that are used for brewing.
However, the project has been met with opposition from some councillors and residents who think the €170,000 (£133,000) the project will cost could be put to better use.
The town’s mayor, Janko Kos, says only half of the construction costs are being met by the council – the remainder will come from private donations:
It’s true the fountain won’t be cheap. But it’s a development project, a tourism product.
Opposition councillors who are less happy about the boozy fountain attempted to scupper the plans at a council meeting last week, but were ultimately outvoted by two-thirds of their colleagues.
