Losing weight is half the battle, the real struggle is keeping the weight from piling back on.

I myself have managed to trim a few inches from my waist through months of clean living, salads and treadmills, only to pile it back on after a couple of naughty holidays.

After a big setback, it’s hard to hop back on the exercise bike and extremely tempting to hibernate away with a pile of snacks and a sense of having let yourself down.

However, one woman has shown it’s possible to get yourself back on track to a happier, healthier version of you, twice over.

24-year-old Ariana Omipi from Auckland, New Zealand, had – by her own account – a toxic relationship with food.

The digital marketing director experienced constant cravings for food, which made getting down to her ideal weight a real challenge. Ariana would opt for big portions, and would often go back for a second helping.

In 2014 – at just 19 years old – Ariana weighed 19 st, 11 lb. Determined to make a change, Ariana followed a careful keto and low carb diet and managed to snip her body weight down to a trim 10st, 9lb in just 11 months.

Ariana’s dramatic weight loss was documented on her Instagram account, where she gained thousands of admiring followers.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a before and after. With all the attention from the previous ones, I’ve found it difficult to share one again. It’s always hard when you’re constantly working on self love to have people critiquing your body, loose skin and sometimes even your happiness. But I know that there are those of you out there who are going through the same journey as me, who have had VSG or who are working on self love. I believe it’s so important to focus on your own individual journey but also to celebrate every single milestone you hit whether that’s a weight loss goal, fitting a goal outfit or even just recognising how far you’ve come mentally. 💕 For those of you who may be new, I had gastric sleeve surgery on March 14th 2018. This surgery has completely transformed my life and helped me to control my portion sizes. Along with a balanced diet and regular exercise I have seen incredible changes in the 9 months since surgery. ☺️ I’m 168cm tall and started with a weight of 126 kilos (278 pounds). I am currently 68 kilos (150 pounds). 68 kilos was my absolute goal weight but never something I thought I would achieve or be at and I feel so PROUD that I am at this milestone despite the fact that I haven’t had a big focus on watching my weight or the scales. 🙌🏼 I think I’ve seen the biggest change over the last couple of months with my body. Especially since working out with @h.feaver_er at the @theexerciseroomnz. When I first started my journey I was generally a size 24 with measurements of bust 110cm, waist 100cm, hips 145cm . I’m currently sitting at a size 10 with measurements of bust 87cm, waist 68cm, hips 105cm 💕

However, it wasn’t long before Ariana was back to her old eating habits, and by the beginning of 2018, she weighed more than ever before, tipping the scales at 21st, 5lb. This was 10kg more than she had weighed before her diet.

Speaking with Femail, Ariana confessed:

It consumed me in a way that I can’t even describe. It was an overwhelming hunger that I could not silence but only block out temporarily.

She continued:

My portion sizes were large portion and I’d constantly feel hungry so go back for seconds, thirds or sometimes even just make another meal.

Ariana decided to take action, and in March 2018 she went in for gastric sleeve surgery to help shift the weight she had put back on.

This serious procedure involved the removal of 90 per cent of her stomach via keyhole surgery, and has proven life changing for Ariana.

At 10st 7lbs, Ariana has dropped over half her body weight and no longer feels intense hunger cravings. She attributes this transformation to the hunger hormone Ghrelin being removed.

THE REALITY 😱😷 This was me only 5 days ago – unposed, raw and vulnerable in my hospital bed moments after surgery. I lay unconscious and unresponsive like this for 4 hours before my eyes opened. My boyfriend took this photo of me in shock as he’d never seen me like this. 😢 I wanted to share this side of my journey because Gastric Sleeve Surgery IS NOT glamorous nor is it a decision that is made lightly. Those who choose this path are in serious need of change. In most cases, to even be considered for Gastric Sleeve Surgery you will have a BMI of over 40 which is classed as MORBIDLY obese. There are significant risks in the surgery alone – death, stomach leaks, internal bleeding, blood clots which could lead to a heart attack or stroke not to mention the risk of complications that can occur longer term. 😳 When I first chose to speak about my journey publicly, I promised to HONESTLY and OPENLY share my journey with you all 💕 I often share an incredibly POSITIVE approach to my journey because that’s just the kind of person I am and the vibe I want to release 🌸 In saying that, I don’t want anyone to have the impression (whether you’re considering having this surgery or whether you’re just watching along in support) that this is an easy solution to weight loss or a way to get that "Instagram bod”. I chose to make this decision because I wanted to prioritise my health so I could live a long and fulfilling life and any other positive changes are just a bonus. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, at times pain and lifestyle changes to conquer. 🙌🌟 I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you – the good, the bad, the ugly! On a side note, my vlog of my Gastric Sleeve Surgery along with the time I spent in hospital will hopefully be live this week over on my Youtube! Check out my link in the description so you can subscribe and be notified first. 🎉

Ariana’s weight loss has also allowed her to become more active, and she now works with a personal trainer two times a week.

Ariana told Femail:

I feel like I have control over food. I can cook something without feeling the desire or need to eat it.

She added:

I have transformed far beyond physical appearance and weight loss this year and I am so immensely happy that I am excited about my life and what is to come for my future again.

In March 2018, I will be undergoing bariatric (weight loss) surgery via gastric sleeve! I wanted to share this with all of you as I’m incredibly excited and want to be able to OPENLY and HONESTLY share my experience with you all. 🙌 💕 Over the years, my weight has been something I’ve worked REALLY REALLY hard on. My discipline, determination and lifestyle changes have helped me to achieve significant weight loss in the past however my constant hunger is something that has made maintaining a healthy weight INCREDIBLY difficult. Within the last 5 years, I have lost, maintained, gained, lost and gained weight. This has been exhausting, physically and emotionally. 😱😥😩 So know that I haven’t made this decision lightly and that it doesn’t come from a place of hate towards my appearance or any negative feelings about myself. I have made this decision for MY long term health, to be able to maintain a manageable healthy weight for ME and not feel the constant desire to need multiple servings of HEALTHY food in one sitting. 💛🌸 For those of you who don’t know what this surgery is about, it will reduce the size of my stomach by approximately 90% while also reducing the hunger hormone (ghrelin) by a significant amount. This surgery is not sponsored nor publicly funded and I am grateful to be in a position where I am able to afford to have this done through the private system at a hospital close to where I live. 🙏🌟 This is just a snippet of what I have to share about this experience and there will be plenty more coming! If there’s anything you want to know about it or would like me share, let me know below. ☺️💭

Of course, gastric sleeve surgery shouldn’t be the first port of call for those trying to lose weight, and is intended for those who are classed as ‘morbidly obese’.

However, it is good to hear Ariana is feeling more in control over her relationship with food. All the very best of luck to her.
