Jar Jar Binks is pretty much the most hated character in the Star Wars universe, encapsulating for many fans everything that was wrong with the prequel trilogy.
However, one fan on Reddit blew everyone’s minds a few months back by postulating that the annoying Gungan may actually be more important than we ever realised – and it’s going viral again. But that’s no surprise, the original post is actually the most popular Reddit entry in history.
The theory bases itself around the fact that the biggest source of evil in the entire Star Wars universe may have been right under our noses the entire time, and it’s a pretty mind-blowing read.
Every Star Wars fan is currently throwing out theories about the 2017 and 2019 sequels, but one Redditor who goes by the name ‘Lumpawarroo’ pretty much set the internet on fire with the now-famous theory about Episodes I to III and how they might affect the new films.
He began:
Here I will seek to establish, that Jar Jar Binks, far from being simply the bumbling idiot he portrays himself as, is in fact a highly skilled force user in terms of martial ability and mind control.
Furthermore, I assert that he was not, as many people assume, just an unwitting political tool manipulated by Palpatine—rather, he and Palpatine were likely in collaboration from the very beginning, and it’s entirely possible that Palpatine was a subordinate underling to Binks throughout both trilogies.
And finally, given the above, I will conclude with an argument as to why I believe it is not only possible, but plausible that Jar Jar will make a profound impact on the upcoming movies, and what his role may be.
From there, Lumpawarroo analysed this idea in depth – exploring the relationship between Jar Jar and Emperor Palpatine, his Force persuasion in the prequel movies, a closer look at Zui Quan martial arts, Jar Jar’s uncanny knack of getting himself out of severe peril, and much more.
Basically, he reckons that Jar Jar fooled us all and was actually secretly in charge of the entire First Order (the reborn Empire) as ‘Supreme Leader Snoke’. However, the consensus now – post Force Awakens – is that Lucasfilm actually backed out of the whole plan, after Jar Jar’s character was voted the most hated character in film history.
The original post is very, very long. So if you don’t want to read it, or simply don’t have the time, there is a very enjoyable video that does all the explaining for you – and it’s just as mind-blowing. And remember the words of George Lucas many moons ago… “Jar Jar is the key to all of this.”
The theory is so strong, someone actually compiled Jar Jar’s most evil ‘sith moments’ into a video that has since been viewed 1.5million times.
The whole thing actually makes a worrying amount of sense, although we reckon Lumpawarroo has probably put more thought into The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith than George Lucas ever did.
I mean, it would make a lot of sense to cancel on the original plans of eventually unveiling Jar Jar as the real Phantom Menace, but with such an iconic family of movies at his finger tips, it’s understandable why he may have backed out when the hate for Binks started to roll in. With that said, had Lucas braved the backlash, he could have executed one of the greatest long cons in film history.
The theory actually makes The Phantom Menace way more watchable in hindsight. I won’t lie, when I first read this theory I re-watched it in a heartbeat with Lucas’s supposed intentions in mind – and yes, it was a very different experience from the first time I sunk into that cinema seat all those years ago, and believed Jar Jar to be an incredibly pointless, bumbling idiot.
I suppose we’ll never know whether the theory is true until George Lucas confirms it himself. Or if the unthinkable happens and Jar Jar unmasks as a Sith Lord in Episode VIII – but we’re not holding our breath.
