According to Nielsen Music data, the album, 25, released on November 20, sold a record-breaking 3.38 million copies in its first week on sale in the US, notching up the largest single sales week for an album since they began monitoring in 1991. It has nearly doubled the 1.8 million copies sold of Taylor Swift’s 1989 – the previous biggest-seller.

The story was no different in Britain, where it also broke records for the highest number of albums sold in a single week of the UK charts shifting more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release – more than the next 86 albums in the charts combined. The previous record was held by Oasis’s Be Here Now, which reached number one with sales of 696,000 in 1997. However that album only went on sale three days before the end of the chart week.

Adele, who has been out of the limelight since winning an Oscar for the Bond theme tune Skyfall in 2013, has also announced her first tour since 2011, hitting Europe next February. It will be her first for almost five years after her last tour ended prematurely when she required surgery on her vocal chords.
