A charity single to raise funds for those affected by the tragic events at Grenfell Tower will be officially released today.
Simon Cowell – who was responsible for organising the recording, has chosen the song ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ – which was originally made famous by duo Simon and Garfunkel.
Stars from all genres of the music world have come together including, The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones, Stormzy and Queen’s Brian May.
The music mogul started the process just days after the fatal blaze, which has killed at least 79 people.
Those who were involved with recording the song, did so at West London’s Sarm Studios, which is just half a mile from the tower.
The track will be released exactly one week on from the tragedy and will be played for the first time across radio stations from 8am.
ITV will also play the song before tonight’s Coronation Street.
All proceeds from the song, along with donations, will go to ‘Artists for Grenfell’ and will be distributed via The London Community Foundation.
Other artists who have lent their names and voices to the song include Bastille, Jessie J, James Blunt, Nile Rodgers, and recent ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winner Tokio Myers.
Cowell took to social media to urge the nation to not only buy the song, but to make further donations via the website, artistsforgrenfell.com.
He wrote:
Thank you to everyone for their help and support in making this happen.
Cowell, who is the CEO of record label Syco, revealed last week that he had been so affected by what he saw on the news, that he was desperate to use his status to help those in need.
He said to do nothing in his situation would be ‘appalling’.
He tweeted:
I am watching the footage of the Grenfell Tower fire in London. Heartbreaking.
This isn’t the first time Cowell has produced a record for charity.
Back in 2010, after the Haiti earthquake, he produced a cover of REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ with the likes of Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey and Kylie Minogue.
Cowell is well-known for supporting various causes and charities.
The X-Factor star is also a patron for ‘Together For Short Lives’ – a charity for children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.
