Singer Kelly Clarkson admitted to ‘spanking’ her children and said it didn’t do her any harm as a child.
Speaking to Amercian radio station 98.9 The Buzz, the Since U Been Gone singer said she’s ‘not above a spanking’ if her children, River Rose, three, and Remington, one, misbehave.
Kelly, who is also stepmother to 16-year-old Savannah and nine-year-old Seth, also said she was spanked as a child and believes she has turned out to be ‘well-rounded’.
She said:
I’m not above a spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into. And I don’t mean like hitting her hard, I just mean a spanking. My parents spanked me and I did fine in life and I feel fine about it.
So that’s a tricky thing when you’re out in public, ’cause then people are like, you know, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking.
I warn her. I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m gonna spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now. Like, this is ridiculous.’
Clarkson married her husband, Brandon Blackstock, in October 2013 at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee.
The 35-year-old said she credits her parenting methods to the fact she was brought up in the southern states of America, Texas to be precise.
She added:
I’m from the South, y’all, so we get spankings. My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me … I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.
Her comments didn’t go down all too well on Twitter though, a number of people commented to say they thought spanking wasn’t right.
One wrote:
I don’t fault previous generations for spanking. They were using the parenting advice they had at the time. But if you choose to spank now, you are choosing something that is proven to be detrimental to kids. “When you know better, you do better”

@kelly_clarkson, spanking is disgusting, unacceptable and is a basically a form of physical violence and is abuse. You may have turned out ‘fine’ but continuing violent disciplinary fear tactics instead of teaching is frankly abuse apologist and triggering to abuse survivors.
And Cathrine Wengaard commented:
I love you @kelly_clarkson but here you are so wrong. It’s proven that spanking CAN help right there when things happens, but it lives a mark on the child for life and can be very distroing [sic] mentally.
