Lady Gaga has defended Cardi B over the backlash she’s faced following her historic Grammy win, saying she deserves her awards.
The Bodak Yellow rapper made history on Sunday (February 10) when she became the first female solo artist to win the Best Rap Album category.
However, her win created a massive backlash and resulted in criticism from many who said she didn’t ‘deserve’ to win the category for her debut album Invasion of Privacy.
Cardi beat many other big names for the award – including Mac Miller, Pusha T, and Travis Scott – resulting in anger and frustration from many music fans.
After first uploading a number of thank you videos to her fans for the award, Cardi then took to Instagram to defend herself before deleting her account altogether.
But now Lady Gaga has taken a stand against the haters, uploading a heartfelt message in support of Cardi on her Twitter account alongside a photo of the two embracing.
You can take a look at the tweet below:
The pair had an adorable bonding moment at the award ceremony, with E! Online reporting the two icons totally fangirled over each other.
So it perhaps isn’t surprising that Gaga wrote this message of support:
It is so hard to be a woman in this industry. What it takes, how hard we work through the disrespectful challenges, just to make art. I love you Cardi. You deserve your awards. Let’s celebrate her fight. Lift her up & honor her. She is brave.
Absolute queen. And it’s so true; after making history and becoming the first female solo artist to win that award, Cardi should be being celebrated. Instead, she’s being torn down.
In an attempt to defend herself, the I Like It rapper uploaded a now-deleted video to social media explaining how hard she worked on her album.
She said:
You know what, it’s not my style for people to put other people down to uplift somebody else. That’s not my style and that’s not what I’m with and I don’t support that, however I’ve been taking a lot of sh*t today.
I’m seeing a lot of bullsh*t today and I saw a lot of sh*t last night and I’m sick of this sh*t. I work hard for my mother f*cking album. I remember last year when I didn’t win for Bodak Yellow, everybody was like, ‘Cardi got snubbed, Cardi got snubbed.’
Now this year’s a f*cking problem? My album went two-time platinum, my n**** and every chart that there was, my album was always top 10. Number one album as well. I f*cking worked my ass off, locked myself in the studio for three months, my n****, then went to sleep in my own bed, sometimes for four days straight, pregnant.
Other huge names such as Missy Elliot, Lil’ Kim, and Chance the Rapper congratulated the rapper on her historic win, proving it’s simply a matter of opinion.
Congratulations to Cardi, keep doing you.
And come back to Instagram soon!
