There’s no doubting the Oscars is one of the most glamorous award shows – if not the most glamorous award show – and Lady Gaga stepped up her game by attending in a Tiffany diamond worth $30 million.
Honestly, I’m surprised it didn’t drag her down by the neck.
The singer turned up to last night’s prestigious event wearing a classy strapless black dress by Alexander McQueen, and elbow-length black gloves – a far cry from the infamous meat dress of 2010’s MTV Awards.
But the most eye-catching-slash-blinding part of her outfit was undoubtedly the huge yellow rock suspended around her neck. The Tiffany Diamond weighs in at 128.54 carats, and was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in a publicity shoot for the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
I imagine the photographers had to make sure their flash setting was off when the A Star Is Born actor made her way down the red carpet, otherwise they could have been left with a collection of blown-out white images thanks to the necklace’s reflection.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the gem is one of the largest yellow diamonds in the world, and is reportedly estimated to be worth $30 million (£23 million). It was discovered in 1877 in the Kimberley Mines in South Africa, and was purchased by Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1878.
The diamond was cut into a cushion-shaped piece featuring 82 facets. Check it out here:
Gaga’s stylists, Sandra Amador and Tom Erebout, spoke about the stunning jewel in a press release, saying:
The chance to work with such an amazing piece of design and history tonight is a creative dream come true.
There are so many beautiful jewels in the world, but the radiant Tiffany Diamond, which weighs over 128 carats, is truly exceptional, which is just so fitting for Lady Gaga.
The 2019 Oscars was the first time the diamond had seen a red carpet, and the necklace was, unsurprisingly, the most expensive piece of jewellery ever worn to the Academy Awards.
Lots of Oscars viewers took to Twitter to comment on the Tiffany Diamond, with many people, like myself, making the connection between Gaga’s Oscars appearance and the cunning plot of Ocean’s 8, where a similar diamond necklace is stolen right off the neck of Anne Hathaway.
Star-studded event. Huge, expensive, rarely-seen-in-public diamond. Did anyone have eyes on Sandra Bullock?
Supposedly Lady Gaga is wearing the Tiffany diamond that was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. If Sandra Bullock and girl posse are spotted at the Oscars, keep your eyes open! #oscars #Oceans8

Every time I see @ladygaga during the Oscars I think Sandra Bullock and the @oceans8movie cast is sitting somewhere mid-caper to steal that 128 carat Tiffany diamond

The 32-year-old got to further show off her dazzling look on stage when A Star Is Born took home the Oscar for Best Original Song with Shallow, as well as when she performed the winning hit with Bradley Cooper.
Gaga was certainly one of the most dazzlingly dressed stars last night!
