After the unsurprising news of UK prime minister Theresa May’s resignation, thoughts quickly moved on to who will be next in line to take the lead.

In the scramble to finally steer the sinking ship off the edge of Brexit cliff, we’ve got Boris Johnson zip-lining in – his perfectly messy blonde coiffure sticking through his bicycle helmet – while Michael Gove flails behind him with a pair off scissors which, he says, he’ll use to cut Boris down, though will ultimately end up falling on himself as he trips over his own incompetence.

Bringing up the rear is Jeremy Hunt, who’s used to following in Boris’ footsteps as he took over as Foreign Secretary when Boris resigned. Hunt was originally a Remainer, but following the party line – and with the position of PM in his sights – he’s now keen to deliver Brexit. Also in the running is Esther McVey, Dominic Raab and Rory Stewart, who all think they too can do what David Cameron initiated but never followed through on, and what Theresa May has just stepped down from.

Anyway, enough of real(ish) politics, no one wants that! What we want is great content from the internet’s funny guy du jour – musician and social media personality extraordinaire, Lewis Capaldi.

As well as having the singing voice of an angel, Capaldi has rapidly made a name for himself on social media thanks to his genuinely funny antics, candid confessionals and expletive-laden outbursts.

Now, however, it seems the Scottish singer is up for throwing his hat in the ring to be the next PM. I know he’d get my vote.

During his appearance on German TV show Aspekte, host Jo Schück noted the coincidence of Theresa May stepping down as the Tories’ number one just as Capaldi’s album reached number one, while people were voting in the European elections (yes, it’s a tenuous link).

Schück said:

It’s just two days before the European elections results, right? And the interesting thing is Theresa May, your number one, is stepping back. And who got the new number one in the UK?

To which Lewis replied:

Me. I will do it. I will be the next prime minister.

So there you have it. Forget the Conservative party electorate deciding who’s going to be next in charge, just give it to Capaldi. You know he’ll do a top job.
