The 25-year-old took to the main stage on Friday (June 28) and in doing so he became the first solo black British artist to headline the festival.

As well as the thousands of people who watched the performance at Worthy Farm, where Glastonbury is held, people across the country also tuned in to witness the event on BBC Two.

He opened his set with songs Where Do You Know Me From and Cold, before performing an acoustic version of Blinded By Your Grace Part 1 with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, as well as Dave and Fredo.

The singer told the crowd:

This the greatest night of my entire life. Who has got energy today?

Stormzy spoke about artists who had ‘paved the way’ for him and named numerous grime artists he is now supporting. Two ballet dancers joined the singer on stage in a moving performance of Don’t Cry For Me, and thousands of delighted fans joined in chanting ‘fuck the government’ and ‘fuck Boris’ as he sang the hit single Vossi Bop.

Dozens of people took to social media to praise Stormzy for his set which he performed without a backing track, instead opting for live instrumentals and backing singers.

The 25-year-old took to Twitter to express his gratitude at having the opportunity to perform, writing:

I an [sic] first black British artist to headline Glastonbury.

At 25 years old I am the second youngest solo act to ever headline Glastonbury, the youngest being a 24 year old David Bowie in 1971.

I’m overwhelmed with emotions, this is the most surreal feeling I’ve ever experienced.

I feel my entire life has lead to this moment. Can’t explain or fathom what this all is but I am 100% sure this is all God and his favour. Giving him all the glory.

Congratulations, Stormzy!
