It’s the year 2000, we survived the looming apocalypse that was the millennium bug, and to celebrate the Baha Men unleashed ‘Who Let The Dogs Out?’ on the world.
The question has stood unanswered for over 16 years as to who was responsible, and just what the song was all about.
Anyone who has ever fallen victim to a cheesy wedding disco may still believe it is about having a dig at women they don’t consider pretty, but it turns out the song is actually having a go at men.
The Baha Men’s version of the song is also a cover, and it is Anslem Douglas -who penned the original 1996 version ‘Doggie’- that has shed some light on it’s meaning.
He told The Huffington Post:
It’s a man-bashing song, it is.
Douglas added that it was inspired by his brother-in-law.
Douglas said:
He used to come in and say, ‘Who let the dogs out?!’ And one time he asked me, ‘Why don’t you turn this into a song?’ And the rest is history.
But who let the bastards out?!
Douglas is staying tight-lipped:
I can’t answer that! If I answer that, people will stop asking. 100 years from now, I will still not [have] answer[ed] that.
As is Steven Greenberg, founder of S-Curve, he said:
I think that’s a question best left unanswered. Why ruin it? Why get people to stop guessing?
Good point, knowing the answer makes the song redundant and could harm future sales…
Baha Men frontman Isaiah Taylor did have his own theory though, he argued:
I always say that that our drummer did that. We say, ‘Hey, man, you let the dogs out!’
So there you have it, you may finally sleep soundly now.
