Footage captured by several onlookers on Twitter shows smoke billowing out of the roof of the building, which is believed to be a block of flats currently under construction.
Speaking to the Metro, eye-witness Nolan MacGregor said:
The canal walkway had been blocked off by firemen. There was one fire engine that I could see on the bridge, south of the building. There were two firemen on the actual canal pathway itself.
People seemed to be really shocked, I heard a few people shouting ‘Oh my God’ and all. I also heard someone say ‘not again’ as they saw the fire.

This blaze comes after another block of flats in Bethnal Green caught fire at the end of last month and while the city is still reeling after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, which left at least 80 people dead.
