It’s not very often you think of a trainer as being environmentally friendly.

Adidas are doing just that, though.

The German apparel legends announced this week that they have created a prototype for an ‘ecologically-beneficial shoe’, made almost entirely from rubbish pulled from the ocean.

The upper shoe is made from illegal deep sea gillnets, and the base is made from sustainable cushioning material.

Adidas recently partnered with Parley for the Oceans, an organisation trying to clean up the oceans.

Parley co-founder Cyrill Gutsch said:

We are extremely proud that Adidas is joining us in this mission and is putting its creative force behind this partnership to show that it is possible to turn ocean plastic into something cool.

The Sea Shepard Conservation Society helped along the way. The organisation went on a 110 day expedition, tracking illegal poachers across the coast of West Africa, which is where the gillnets came from.

If you do like the look of the trainer, or the ethical make up of it, unfortunately, you won’t be able to get a pair just yet.

An Adidas spokeswoman said:

This is not a plan, this is an action.

We did this to show what we are capable of doing when we all put our heads together.

She did however, confirm that Adidas will be incorporating recycled plastics into it’s shoes by next year.
