Elections — especially this election — have a way of sucking all the air out of the room.

While America was on the edge of their collective seat to see who would win the U.S. presidential election, and many vowing to leave the country depending on the outcome, it’s easy to miss some of the larger stories that otherwise wouldn’t be buried beneath the noise.

Here are the stories you may have missed while Trump and Clinton battled it out for presidency.

Croydon tram overturns leaving five dead, at 50 injured

A tram in Croydon has overturned, leaving 5 dead and 50 injured, the BBC reports.

London Ambulance Service said 51 people had been taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London, and Croydon University Hospital. St George’s said it was treating 20 people.

Transport for London said the tram derailed just after 06:00 GMT. British Transport Police (BTP) has arrested the driver but would not confirm what for.

Gunmen kill 36 Nigerian miners in Nigeria

Gunmen have killed 36 gold miners in north-east Nigeria, according to police.

The attackers overran a mining camp in the Maru district of Zamfara state, in the latest in a series of similar raids in the region. Zamfara governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar called the attack an ‘act of terrorism’, but the gunmen’s motive is unclear.

In July, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari sent special military units to fight armed gangs based in the forests of Zamfara, the BBC reports. Hundreds of people have been killed in villages in the area over the past three years.

Iraqi forces under fire as they attempt to retake Mosul

Iraqi forces say they have retaken the first neighbourhood close to the centre of the city of Mosul as they continue to fight Islamic State. The United Nations says 34,000 people have now fled the city.

Rio de Janeiro workers invade assembly in protest at austerity

In light of austerity plans to deal with the Brazilian city’s financial crisis, thousands of public workers have stormed the Rio de Janeiro assembly in protest.

The measures, including cuts salaries, were announced last week. Many public workers have not been paid in months, and on Monday, the federal government froze Rio’s accounts ordering the state to pay millions of dollars in unpaid debt, the BBC reports.

The demonstrators, mostly firefighters, police and prison officers, spent three hours inside the assembly chamber where some wrecked windows, doors and offices.

Mass grave containing 100 bodies found in town south of Mosul

A mass grave containing the remains of about 100 beheaded civilians has been discovered inside a school in a town south of Mosul, Iraq’s military said in a statement Monday.

The mass grave was found by Iraqi forces in the School of Agriculture on the outskirts of Hammam al-Alil, a town that was recaptured from ISIS on Monday.
