The remains of almost half those killed inside the Twin Towers on 9/11 have never been found.

A colossal 2,753 people were killed in the terrorist attack – the worst ever on US soil – after a team of hijackers flew jet airliners into the World Trade Center in New York on September 9 2001.

However, despite 16 years passing, over 1,100 victims are still unidentified.

Manhattan’s Medical Examiner’s Office is still trying to identify remains using new DNA technology that simply wasn’t available at the time of the attack.

Earlier this month, the remains of a man who was killed in one of the towers were identified.

It was the first of its kind since 2015.

Forensic Prinz Mechthild Prinz explained:

There was a lot of destructive force – gallons and gallons of airline gasoline burning and the buildings collapsing and the site burning for a couple of weeks.

The remains – I mean, a human body is pretty fragile. It was almost like a mass cremation.

Thousands have gathered across the country to mark the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

President Trump presided over his first 9/11 commemoration in office, saying ‘Our values will endure, our people will thrive, our nation will prevail, and the memory of our loved ones will never, ever die’, at a service outside the Pentagon.
