Onlookers helped throw water on the shark to keep it alive, before a group of rescuers from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy were able to tow the fish back into the sea.

The footage, posted on YouTube, shows rescuers using a rope and guiding the shark into deeper water via boat.

As the shark returned to the water and swam away, those gathered on the beach cheered and clapped with excitement.

Chatham Harbormaster Stuart Smith, who was called in to help, said:

Twenty, 25 years ago, they wouldn’t be exactly helping the shark. They’d be harming the shark, but now every single person on that beach was trying to assist it. The people on the beach made the difference.

And how awesome is it to see all these people rallying around an animal that was once so feared?
