Yesterday’s election results has left the world in shock – Donald Trump, a billionaire real estate mogul with no political experience, will be the next President of the United States. But despite winning the majority vote, it seems not many people are happy with the Republican’s win.
While millions are asking themselves how Trump could have possibly been elected president, Bernie Sanders has the answer: He ‘tapped into the anger’ of the middle class.
After previously declining to comment on the results of the election Tuesday night due to having ‘nothing polite to say,’ the Vermont senator released a powerful statement on Wednesday afternoon, explaining why he believes Donald Trump won the election, before taking a not-so-subtle dig at the president-elect.
On Wednesday, Sanders issued the following statement after Trump was elected president of the United States:
Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids – all while the very rich become much richer.
He then outlined exactly where he could find common ground with the Republican, and where he could not:
To the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country, I and other progressives are prepared to work with him. To the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies, we will vigorously oppose him.
He couldn’t have been more clear, and it seems the people have voiced similar (if not more hateful) opinions.
Protests across America – especially outside the Trump Tower – have broken out since news of the Republican’s win spread.
With Trump’s track record of insulting minorities, women, and those with disabilities, it’s unclear whether he will take up the role as a president for all, or just a president for some.
It’s gonna be a long road, folks.
