For two guys with a time machine they’ve left it a while to come back, but we now have official confirmation that Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan are returning to the big screen.
Actors Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves announced the exciting news from the Hollywood Bowl, for some reason. Maybe it’s another history project, who knows, but it’s exciting nonetheless.
The totally excellent dudes also revealed the title for the third installment of the bogus slacker comedy – Bill and Ted: Face the Music.
Check it out:
What’s even more exciting is that the film has a release date of August 21, 2020. It’ll be directed by Dean Parisot (of Galaxy Quest fame), and is penned by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, who wrote the first two films, so you can be sure it’ll stay faithful to the franchise.
According to EW, Winter and Reeves will resume their roles of Bill and Ted (obviously), but the now-middle-aged best friends must set out on a new adventure when ‘a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe’.
Apparently, they’ll be helped out by their families, old friends and some music legends along the way.
Speaking to EW about getting the go-ahead for the third film, Winter said:
The whole trajectory of getting the next one off the ground has been pretty much exactly like the experience of getting the original.
Going to every studio, and they’re like, ‘What the F is this?’ It’s this kind of independent spirit, and the films have an anachronistic quality to them that’s a big part of what they are, fundamentally.
I’m really happy that this one is the same. It doesn’t feel like some stale knockoff that a studio would have immediately gone, ‘Oh, this feels right. We have rebranded very successfully.’
The first film, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, was released in 1989, while the followup, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, arrived in 1991.
Despite mixed reviews on release, both films are now firmly cemented as cult comedy classics, largely thanks to the lovable protagonists onscreen bromance (before bromances were even a thing) and, in the sequel, their hilarious take on Ingmar Bergman’s iconic The Seventh Seal.
Can’t wait for the threequel!
Bill and Ted: Face the Music rocks into theatres August 21, 2020.
