A creature, which appears to be some kind of dolphin, crocodile hybrid, left Ethan Tipper scratching his head when he discovered the monstrous beast at Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, the Mirror reports.
The photo has split opinion on social media with some suggesting it could be a large hairtail cutlass fish, while others thought it had to be photoshopped.
Ethan Tippa - FacebookBut fish collector for the Australian Museum, Mark McGrouther, told the Daily Mail Australia he suspects it is a pike eel, a type of fish native to the deep waters on the east coast of Australia.
He said:
This is the first time I have ever seen one of them in the flesh.
I suspect it was caught and discarded by fisherman who got more than they bargained for when they tried to reel it in.
The mysterious prehistoric-looking creature lives at the bottom of the ocean and has a distinctive fleshy snout and nail-like teeth – as well as a flabby pink body.
This is further proof that Australia is the most terrifying place on planet Earth…
