This couple has done things differently when it comes to wedding photos – and it was completely by coincidence.

Sarah and Matthew Oke, from New Zealand, were having their wedding photos taken by a photographer on a sunny Saturday when they ran into a group of Black Power gang members.

The members, who were mourning the death of their friend, had just completed a hikoi — a Māori term meaning a long march to pay respect to the dead — when the group’s path crossed with the couple.

After the official photographs were taken, the couple became stuck in a carpark near the forest due to vehicles clogging up the road, so the photographer’s husband asked if the couple could get a photo with the group.

Rebecca Inns, the couple’s photographer, said: “They were really accommodating and had a discussion among themselves and after some discussion they decided that it would be fine… this is the result.”

We always aim to capture something a little different with our couples… and on Saturday I think we did just that!

She called the photo ‘totally random, totally unplanned and totally unique’.

The picture, which has been liked more than 3000 times, has attracted hundreds of comments – with some calling it the best photo ever.

Mrs Oke told the New Zealand Herald:

The guys in the photo were so respectful and very kind.

They congratulated us and told me how beautiful I looked. It was a very cool experience and something we will share with our children.

Black Power, for those of you who don’t know, are a prominent gang in New Zealand which was formed in 1970. The group is predominantly made up of Māori and Polynesian members, and inspired by the U.S. Black Power movement.

Looks like wedding photos aren’t just for bringing together relatives.
