The head of UKIP and one of the key campaigners for Brexit, Nigel Farage, has resigned from his post as the leader of UKIP.

Speaking at an event in London, Mr Farage said that he had never wanted to be a career politician and that he would be standing down.

Farage said that during the Brexit campaign he wanted his country back, but now that he has achieved this goal he wants his life back, reports the BBC.

Farage added that UKIP was in a ‘pretty good place’ and insisted that he would not change his mind about resigning like he did in the aftermath of the general election last year.

However, it would appear that Mr Farage is setting his sights high, saying that the UK needs a ‘Brexit prime minister’.

It is also rumoured that Farage may be considering a position with the Conservative Party after next Prime Minister hopeful, Andrea Leadsom, said she would not rule out giving Nigel Farage a position if she became leader in October.

Mr Farage made a tweet just after 10am this morning thanking his followers and praising Brexit:

However, somewhat ironically, Nigel Farage will continue to work as an MEP for the next two years.

Douglas Carswell – UKIP’s only Member of Parliament, who is likely to take over from Mr Farage made this bizarre and potentially smug emoji tweet:

And as you can probably imagine, Twitter users everywhere have already reacted in the masses:

However, not all of the responses to Farage’s unexpected resignation were particularly negative:

Mr Farage and Boris Johnson were perhaps the two most prominent campaigners for Britain to leave the EU.

Just last Thursday, Boris who was the bookies’ favourite to become Britain’s next Prime Minister, announced that he would not be running for PM.
