The Russian ambassador to Ankara, Andrei Karlov, has reportedly died after being shot while visiting a photo gallery in the capital.

Apparently several other people were injured during the attack which took place just a matter of hours after protests took place in the country about Russia’s intervention in Syria, reports The Independent.

A video of the event shows Mr. Karlov making a speech at the event called ‘Russia as seen by Turks’ before a series of gunshots ring out.

After being shot numerous times in the back, Karlov jolts forward before the camera spins around revealing the gunman.

The assassin, dressed in a suit and waving a gun in the air, passionately shouted:

We die in Aleppo, you die here. Don’t forget about Aleppo, don’t forget about Syria. You’re not safe. Only my dead body will leave here. Allahu Akbar.

The gunman, who is thought to have been a police officer, was also killed following the assassination as special police entered the building.
