Three men who took part in a brutal gang attack on a British family which left an elderly couple unconscious, have reportedly been arrested and charged.

The appalling footage which came to light yesterday and shows the father, 68, mum in her sixties and son, 43, being punched to the ground by a gang of men as they celebrated the Thai New Year in Hau Hin, Thailand.

The three are then cruelly kicked as they lie on the ground and the mother who tries to sit up at one point is brutally kicked in the jaw, knocking her out, The Mirror reports.

A man who claims to have been drinking in the same bar as the trio say that the gang targeted them because they were westerners.

Thai police have now reportedly arrested three of the men and charged them with grievous bodily harm.

The family had enjoyed a night out in the beach resort of Hua Hin – located 250km from the capital of Bangkok – when they were involved in an argument.

Officers have identified four men as the assailants: Yingyai Kwangkum-in, 32, Supatra Baithong, 32,  Siva Yoksri, 20, and Chaiya Jaiboon, 20 according to Thai-based website KhaosodEnglish.com.

Colonel Chaiyakorn Seeladecho of the local police said that Yingyai, Supatra and Siva had all been arrested on April 16, but that police were still searching for Chaiya.

He also added that ‘the perpetrators said they were drunk’ and that they had ‘apologised to the family’.

The police colonel also explained how the son had received stitches for a scalp wound, while his father had a swollen wound on his head, and his mother suffered a head injury that has left her with occasional headaches.

Yingyai, Supatra and Siva will be tried for causing grievous bodily harm in a Hua Hin court, where the judges have sped up witness examination because the family are scheduled to return to Britain soon, Chaiyakorn said.

Some reports have suggested that as many as six people could be arrested over the attack.

One eyewitness, who claim he was also beaten in the attack, detailed his experience online.

He wrote:

Within 20/30 meters of leaving the bar the Thais were punching the 65-year-old old lady in the face. The elderly gentleman was down on the floor, and their son was beaten very badly.

At this point I caught up to the scene and pushed one of the youths away from the woman… I got severely punched and kicked for my troubles, but felt the need to protect this frail lady.

The three of them are still hospitalised, and I will need cosmetic dental work done.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: “Our staff have been in contact with the family to offer assistance and will remain in contact with the local authorities.”

The FCO said they had no information on the condition of the three UK nationals following the attack.
